Combination of highway assistant and personal pilot
BMW announces that it has received permission to produce a new automated vehicle, which will be a combination of the two BMW systems Autobahn Assistant and Personal Pilot.
According to the information provided, BMW is the first car manufacturer in the world to receive this approval. This marks a new milestone in automated driving. The new model is to bear the name "BMW 7 Series".

Details of the BMW highway assistant
The BMW highway assistant is available up to a speed of 130 km/h. According to BMW, this can be used as an additional function of the steering and lane guidance assistant on highways with structurally separated lanes. This offers additional comfort, especially on long journeys. The autonomous assistant allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods of time. Nevertheless, the traffic situation must be constantly monitored and the driver must be able to intervene in any situation.
The active lane change assistant can also automate lane changes in the BMW 7 Series. An overtaking maneuver can also be carried out. A lane change offered by the system is carried out by the driver looking into the exterior mirror.
Details on the BMW Personal Pilot
BMW also explains that the BMW Personal Pilot function allows the driver to completely hand over all tasks to the vehicle at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The driver must nevertheless be able to take control again at any time. The driver must nevertheless be able to take back control at any time. This function allows the driver to take over secondary tasks while driving.

The two functions are offered by BMW for a total of 6,000 euros. Customers who already own vehicles with the BMW Personal Pilot optional equipment can purchase the BMW Highway Assistant free of charge from August this year.
