Use of SAF for sustainable air travel

Cooperation between DHL and Formula 1

DHL and Formula 1 are working together to promote sustainability in aviation by using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Since the Australian Grand Prix in March this year, Formula 1 has been using DHL's GoGreen Plus service to reduce CO₂ emissions from flights by around 80 percent compared to conventional aviation fuel. Up to the Singapore Grand Prix in September, around 20 percent of freight flights outside Europe were carried out with SAF.

This marks a new chapter in the 20-year partnership between DHL and Formula 1, which aims to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Paul Fowler, Head of DHL Motorsports Logistics, emphasizes: "With our expertise, we support Formula 1 in transporting race cars and other equipment internationally as efficiently as possible."

Less CO2 emissions

DHL offers transportation by land, sea and air. This season, DHL has doubled its fleet of biofuel-powered trucks to 37 vehicles. This reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 83 percent compared to diesel vehicles. In addition, DHL uses Boeing 777 airplanes, which produce around 17 percent fewer emissions than conventional airplanes.

Formula 1 is also optimizing the race calendar to minimize transport and use shorter routes.

DHL and Formula 1 are jointly researching further measures to reduce CO₂ emissions in motorsport.

Book-and-claim system

SAF is produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil.

In Formula 1 logistics, SAF is used via the "book-and-claim" system. The environmental effect of the reduced emissions is separated from the physical fuel. This means that buyers can purchase a certain quantity of SAF and have the associated emission reductions credited to them. The fuel itself does not have to be owned. SAF is used, but not necessarily in the specific aircraft that fly for Formula 1.

The system enables various players to participate in reducing emissions.

DHL has received certification from the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) for its SAF brokerage to Formula 1.
