Traditional group invests more than 300 million euros
Merck is building a new research center at its headquarters in Darmstadt. According to the science and technology company, it is investing more than 300 million euros in the project. The new building is part of an investment program that will amount to around 1.5 billion euros by 2025.
The foundation stone for the Advanced Research Center was laid on April 25, 2024 in the presence of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Once completed, around 550 employees will work in the building from the beginning of 2027.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: "Investments such as those made by Merck here at the Darmstadt headquarters make exceptional economic, medical and scientific sense." They are a commitment to Germany as a strong pharmaceutical, industrial and research location and demonstrate the strength of the life sciences.
Bundling research on key technologies
According to its press release, Merck intends to bundle research on key technologies of the Life Science business sector in the Advanced Research Center.
As the long-established company further explains, the research center is intended to support customers in Europe and around the world in finding solutions to crucial medical challenges.
Commenting on the new research center, Belén Garijo, Chairman of the Executive Board of Merck, said: "With this strategic investment, we are strengthening Merck's leading position in key technologies for the development and manufacture of novel medicines." Garijo also said: "As a global leader in life science technologies, we continue to invest in research and development 'Made in Germany'." This is how Merck enables scientific progress.
