Decarbonization of international maritime shipping
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG(HHLA) has joined the "Hamburg Declaration on the Decarbonization of Global Shipping". Chairwoman of the Executive Board Angela Titzrath signed a declaration of intent at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2024.
The aim is to drive forward the decarbonization of international maritime shipping and bring it into line with global climate targets, in particular the 1.5 degree target.
According to the information provided, this is a significant milestone in the joint efforts to promote sustainability in the maritime and logistics industry.
Climate-neutral by 2040
On October 7 and 8, 2024, around 1,600 participants from over 100 countries will gather in Hamburg to discuss various future topics in more than 60 sessions. The aim of the conference is to develop concrete initiatives to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. All stakeholders along the entire value chain are to work more closely together.
HHLA has firmly integrated sustainability into its business model and plans to reduce its CO₂ emissions by at least 50 percent by 2030. The aim is to become climate-neutral across the Group by 2040. By the end of 2023, the company had already reduced its emissions by around 40% compared to 2018. In 2023, 79% of sales already met the relevant regulatory requirements.
About the Hamburg Sustainability Conference
The Hamburg Sustainability Conference is a joint initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Michael Otto Foundation and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
The aim of the conference is to initiate change processes and provide long-term support. It is to take place regularly in the coming years.
