Software reduces empty space in shipping boxes

Fraunhofer IML presents optimized carton set solution

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML has developed CASTN, a software program that analyzes and optimizes the volume utilization of shipping cartons.

According to the company, the aim is to reduce empty space and thereby lower material consumption, transport costs, emissions, and expenses.

According to the press release, many companies have been using their shipping cartons inefficiently up to now. CASTN aims to create transparency about actual utilization and support the development of an optimized standard carton set that fits the product and order structure.

Regulatory requirements and sustainability

According to the Fraunhofer Institute, the software is designed to help companies prepare for the upcoming EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR), which stipulates a minimum volume utilization of 50%.

Higher capacity utilization reduces packaging material and transport volume while also helping to reduce CO₂ emissions. The aim is to combine efficiency, sustainability, and regulatory requirements.

Data-based approach and practical application

According to the institute, CASTN is based on a data-driven approach. An integrated data check is designed to evaluate the quality of article, order, and carton data and identify weak points, as optimization is heavily dependent on the database.

The software is said to have been developed in collaboration with partners from industry and commerce and is now available on the market. Companies can use it independently or via third-party providers.

Premiere and market launch

According to reports, CASTN will be presented for the first time at the E-Commerce Berlin Expo. The IGEPA Group plans to offer the solution as a service to its customers.

With CASTN, Fraunhofer IML demonstrates that more efficient packaging solutions can combine economic benefits with sustainability and regulatory compliance.
