Slump in profits at DHL

Three DHL Group and Deutsche Post flags in front of a modern building.

Following the very successful year 2022, the DHL Group now significantly weaker figures for the 2023 financial year.

According to the press release, the logistics service provider's turnover in 2023 was 81.8 billion euros, compared to 94.4 billion euros in the previous year. The operating result (EBIT) fell from 8.4 billion euros to 6.3 billion euros. The Group's free cash flow excluding net M&A for 2023 was 3.3 billion euros (2022: 4.6 billion euros).

The company emphasises that EBIT and free cash flow for 2023 are significantly higher than in the pre-pandemic year 2019. The Group has thus been able to demonstrate its strengthened position even in a persistently weak market environment. Earning power demonstrated, writes the DHL Group.

Overall, DHL Group generated consolidated net profit after non-controlling interests of EUR 3.7 billion in 2023. In the previous year, consolidated net profit totalled EUR 5.4 billion.

Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group, says: „The year 2023 was characterised by a weak global economy and, above all, weak global trade.“ Its high profitability allows the company to continuously invest in its network, sustainability, digitalisation and e-commerce.

Meyer explains the possible development in the current year: „In 2024, we will continue to face major uncertainty factors such as volatility in demand and geopolitical crises. However, we are very well positioned for the opportunities and challenges of 2024.“
