Cashless shopping in Düsseldorf soon possible
The food retailer Rewe announces that it will test the „Pick&Go“ system for the first time in a Rewe store in Düsseldorf. Previously, this new structure has been introduced in Cologne, Munich, and Berlin.
Customers can pack the products they want and leave the Rewe store without having to pay at the checkout. With the help of modern Camera and sensor technology the purchase is registered during packing and automatically billed. This is done in collaboration with Trigo Vision Ltd., a company specialising in computer vision technology. „Pick&Go“ promotes speed and convenience and simplifies the Purchasing process.
About the „Pick&Go“ System
According to the press release, the markets in which „Pick&Go“ has already been successfully introduced are running smoothly. In case of customer queries, store staff are available.
The cameras and sensors are located in, among other places, the shelf bases. In total, around 17 kilometres of high-speed network cables are used.
For data protection reasons, the image recordings during shopping are used exclusively to enable checkout-free shopping. Facial recognition does not take place.
Rewe Market Düsseldorf
The Rewe supermarket in Düsseldorf, where „Pick&Go“ is now being tested, offers approximately 18,000 items across around 750 square metres.
Jana Sanktjohanser, Project Manager at REWE, explains: „We will be testing the system and shopping processes for several weeks before our customers are invited to hybrid shopping. We have learned a great deal from the markets so far. Nevertheless, it is not possible to check all shopping processes under real conditions without an extensive test phase.” The test phase is to be completed after Easter this year.
In the future, 30 employees will be hired in the market.
