Study on the shortage of skilled workers in Germany
Why Germany urgently needs skilled immigration.
A study by the Institute for Employment Research and Coburg University of Applied Sciences shows that the German labour market is reliant on immigration from non-EU countries. The reasons for this are the ageing of society and the decline in the working-age population.
Neither the influx of foreigners in recent years nor rising birth rates since 2011 have been able to compensate for this. According to the study, Germany needs 260,000 immigrants annually to meet labour demand. Immigration from the EU alone is not sufficient; third countries would have to contribute 146,000 people per year.
Even a higher birth rate or more working women and older people wouldn't be able to meet the demand on their own. A skilled immigration law is intended to bring specifically needed qualifications to Germany.
