Expansion of the logistics centre: Automated high-bay warehouse

The Würth Industrie Service GmbH & Co. KG has opened its Logistics centre in Bad Mergentheim with an automated High bay warehouse expanded. According to the company, this project represents an important milestone in its 25-year history.

The Würth Industrial Park is one of the most modern logistics centres in Europe. Around 20,000 customers are supplied from there every day.

Details about the high-bay warehouse

According to the information provided, the high-bay warehouse offers 59,000 pallet storage spaces with a height of 50 metres on an area of 4,000 square metres.

Six rail-guided storage and retrieval machines (SRMs) automatically store and retrieve pallets of small parts. These devices travel in six aisles of 120 metres each at a speed of up to 180 m/min. Each device can carry a total of around 2,400 kg. They also save energy by diverting excess energy between the drives.

The new warehouse automatically optimises the material flow. A special material flow computer monitors all pallet movements. Thanks to the gradual commissioning, ongoing operations could be continued without interruption.

Helmut Eisenkolb, Managing Director for Logistics at Würth Industrie Service, explains: „With the commissioning, we have successfully completed one of the largest construction phases in the high-bay warehouse sector. The continuous further development of our logistics using innovative technologies and new approaches not only ensures the future viability of our company, but also that of Europe as a business location in particular.“

Sustainability

Würth Industrie Service uses renewable energies to secure the future supply of customers and energy at the site.

A photovoltaic system has already been installed this year. This system is expected to generate around 800,000 kWh of electricity per year. This makes it one of the largest photovoltaic façade systems in the D-A-CH region.

Würth received the „Excellent Sustainability 2023“ award for this sustainable commitment.
