Terminal expansion at Emmerich port completed

Terminal expansion in Emmerich Port

Modernisation strengthens trimodal location

The most important thing first: The Modernisation of the container terminal in Emmerich Port reaches a crucial conclusion with the official commissioning of a new container crane on 11 May 2026. With investments running into millions, the site will become more efficient and sustainable, strengthening its role as a central trimodal hub.

Key Facts:

  • Central investment: New container crane replaces outdated facility; total costs for crane runway and crane approx. €12 million.
  • Infrastructure upgrade: Expansion of terminal area by 12,000 m² and modernisation of crane tracks completed.
  • Financial volume: total investment of around €20 million, supported by combined transport funding.
  • Future outlook: Renewal of a second container crane already planned by 2028 (funding approval secured).

Comprehensive infrastructure renewal at Emmerich Terminal

According to the press release, Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe (CRWL) officially commissioned a new container crane at the Port of Emmerich on 11 May 2026. The investment was made by the port owner, Port Emmerich – Infrastruktur- und Immobiliengesellschaft mbH. This marks the initial completion of a multi-year expansion project at the container terminal.

According to Contargo, the facility is said to have been significantly expanded in recent years: around 12,000 square metres of additional terminal area, as well as modernised crane tracks and new handling infrastructure, were created. The aim was comprehensive modernisation and performance enhancement of the site.

New container crane increases efficiency and sustainability

The new container crane has replaced an older, technically obsolete facility. As the press release states, the new crane is intended to enable more efficient and, at the same time, more sustainable container handling.

The investments in the crane track and container crane amount to approximately 12 million euros. A total of around 20 million euros has been allocated for the modernisation of the Emmerich port. The project was supported as part of the funding guideline for combined transport (KV), which connects waterways, rail, and road.

Further expansion already planned

Despite the completed construction phase, the development of the site is not yet finished. According to Contargo, an application for funding for the renewal of a second container crane was already submitted in 2022. Shortly before the current commissioning, there was a positive signal from the responsible funding authority regarding this.

According to the company, the aim is to replace the second crane bridge by 2028. This will ensure and further expand the terminal's performance in the long term, thereby strengthening its important role in regional and supra-regional freight transport.
